Autism is a frustrating disorder mostly because there are no known causes or cures. Most other such diseases throw you a bone or something, but autism just draws a blank much of the time. Some even think that it has got to be environmental factors that bring it about, but there is not data to prove all that. And so we keep on guessing and testing and hoping that someday before all our kids are born that way, we will find a way to put the syndrome away.
If you are not a very careful person, you could find that after a period of normal development, an autistic child could lose all their social abilities due to some error on your part. Social difficulty is already an established symptom of the brain disorder, so you might not be surprised about that. What would concern you is the fact a lot of the progress you have made with the past are erased in just when you thought you were touching base. And that s just the issue with living with autistic kids; you d be like you were walking on egg shells all the time.
It is rare to have an autistic child imitate the sounds or gestures from their caregiver. It does not matter much that it is a parent or a stranger, they just appear to lock themselves up in a distant world. In certain severe cases, the child even appears to be unable to distinguish a parent from any other person. If you have an autistic child who recognizes and responds to you, you are on good ground.
You might have seen an autistic child holding their ears and yelling uncontrollably at the slightest provocation, as though they were in some untold pain. Sometimes you might not be able to hear the sound they seem to be yelling about, but if you were very attentive, you d know to look for it because it s certainly there. You see, autism makes it difficult for the child to speak or play, but overall, the child is not brain dead. You might want to learn to trust them so that they can reciprocate that trust.
