Social networking has become the “in” thing nowadays, allowing us to instantly interact and share information with our friends online, but it’s also an open portal to meeting unsavory characters we normally wouldn’t want to know. Sexual predators are especially on the lookout for young people who frequent these social networking sites. Parent should become aware on what’s going on and should take the proper steps to guard their children.

Discussing the issue with your children would be the surest way to protect them from the perils in these sites. Create some guidelines regarding their computer usage, but make it a point to explain the reasoning behind it. Regularly reassess the guidelines you set for your children, as they grow their understanding becomes deeper and their computer skills become better so you should adapt the guidelines according to these factors.

It doesn’t matter what age your kids are, there are certain restrictions that you need to strictly and constantly implement.

When talking with people they don’t know, they should refrain from mentioning important facts about their family and themselves. When they are conversing with strangers, they should be aware that innocent questions like what their name is, where they live and where they study can lead these strangers to their location.

Advice your children to use screen names online, use ones that have no relation to their real name or to their background. Bad people who are used to this will find it easy to link the information together and find out who the children are and where they are located.

To limit the sites your children have access to, you should install a program intended to screen unsuitable sites. Closely keep track of the people your child talks to in the chat room, you never know who might be posing as a kid. You should confine the people who can view your kid’s website to close family and friends.

It is imperative that your children know that you are readily available to them and that they should approach you the moment they feel uneasy about things. Every kid has to go through the difficult process of growing up and learning from their mistakes, but it is also our role as parent to reassure them that they are not alone and that they can rely on us for support. Who knows what surprises they might encounter on social networking sites.
