When one pictures a Southern belle, visions of grace and elegance spring to mind as hoop skirts engrossed in layers of ruffles. Cut the trunk and front bits of the bodice. The back will be in two halves so a zipper could be added. Taper the bodice to some extent in-front, keeping it flat with the spine. Produce a ruffle within the same fabric as the dress to use as trim for your rounded neckline. Use elastic to make it puff out across the top. Pullup two areas of the skirt as the illustration shows. Tack them with small stitches in two spots so that they develop a ballooning effect in-front. Below the top layer, add four layers of wide ruffles descending towards the bottom with the dress.

Sew the bodice towards the skirt, letting the pointed waist show over the waistband with the skirt.

Wear a hoop skirt or square dancing crinoline to produce the skirt even fuller. The crinoline is likely to make the skirt fall in the knees down.
