Putting together a website can be scary, especially if you are new to web development and projects like it. If you are doing this project solo it is natural to feel a little bit intimidated. The process can even be a risky one. It is important to be very careful about who gets access to your private information. Choosing a good web hosting company is the best way to ensure that your development project gets off on the right foot. Of course, knowing what you need to do is one thing but how do you know which hosting company to choose?

Researching different companies is a good place to start. You will encounter hundreds (or even thousands) of different hosting companies that will all offer you dozens of web hosting packages to choose from. Take your time and learn everything you can about the hosts that seem the most promising. You want to find out everything you can through both on and offline methods. Find reviews. Investigate the business practices of each company that interests you. You cannot learn too much about any of these companies. This will be extra true for the company you choose to use because that is the company that will be able to look at your private information and bank account.

Ask all of the questions that come into your mind. You need to make actual contact with every one of the companies that you might choose for your hosting. Ask if you can talk to someone who works in the customer service department. Forget using any company that won’t let you talk to a real person! If the company does not provide live people to represent it through the phone or in person, do not trust that company! If a hosting company is legitimate it will provide you with a way to contact a live employee and allow you and that employee to have an impromptu conversation-if this is not provided the company is probably just another internet scam. No matter what the size of the company-legitimate operations have live people working for them. Be wary of any company without live representatives!

Look into the company’s business practices. Legitimate companies will be listed with their local business bureaus. Look at the business registries of the city and state where the company keeps its corporate headquarters-if you can’t find it be wary! Find out if the company is listed within the Better Business Bureau. Avoid companies that have had lots of complaints registered against them. It is a good idea to avoid any company that has not been registered with the city and state authorities. Even people who operate independently are required to register themselves with their city and state. Be wary of any company whose operations cannot be legally verified.

Keeping scam artists from taking advantage of you can take some work. Being wary and careful is far better than getting scammed. It is not possible to be too careful or to ask too many questions. Keep in mind that you will be paying this company to provide you with a service. Don’t share your private information or bank account information with a company that you do not trust. Scam artists are everywhere and the very last thing you need is to be taken for a ride by one of them. Identity thieves lurk around every corner! Being too careful is impossible.
